What the heck is a "Growler?"
A growler is a U.S. half gallon
glass jug used to transport draft beer in the United States.
They are commonly sold at breweries and brewpubs as a means
to sell take-out beer. Growlers are also used by homebrewers
as an alternative to kegs or smaller bottles for carbonating
and storing their beer.1 As the story goes, farmers
once used growlers to carry beer stored in wooden barrels in the barn into the
farmhouse.
OK, so if we bring syrup from the sugarhouse to the farmhouse in a
bottle that is very similar to a beer growler, then why not also call this syrup bottle
a growler? So we did. Plus, it's a lot of fun when people ask, "Why do you call it a
growler?
"We're probably the only ones in Vermont that call one of our maple syrup bottle a
growler, but that's what makes it fun!" says Helen Robb
The Syrup - It's only fitting that the growler bottle be filled with a
syrup that has a robust maple flavor, as does Dark Amber.
The Dark Amber maple syrup is pure and natural, produced at the Robb's
small dairy farm in southern Vermont. Charlie Sr., Helen, and
the Robb Family have been maple sugaring for 4 generations!
They take great pride in the quality of their
Vermont maple syrup. It's what they do.
Make your own Maple Walnut Drizzle - It's easy! Simply combine
fresh walnuts with maple syrup. Warm the Dark Amber maple syrup a bit in
a sauce pan first and it's even better. Pour the mixture over vanilla ice cream or apple pie. YUM!
If you plan to jar your own Maple Walnut Drizzle,
heat the syrup to 180 degrees, add walnuts, jar and seal. As the syrup cools,
it creates a vaccuum that seals the jar. Maple Walnut Drizzle makes a wonderful
holiday gift.
We also offer a smaller 8.45 oz. Mini-Growler
syrup bottle.
